Extract Subtitles From a Video

Save the subtitle tracks of an MKV or MP4 as SRT.

By · Last updated

Your files are processed on your device and never uploaded.

Quick answer: This tool copies the text subtitle tracks out of MKV, WebM, MP4 and MOV files and saves each as an SRT, WebVTT or (for styled tracks) ASS file, named by language. The video is read on your device in pieces, so even a 50 GB film works without uploading anything; the picture and sound are not touched.

Films and series often carry subtitles inside the video file, in several languages. Save them as separate SRT files to edit, translate, or use with another player, TV or video editor.

How to extract subtitles

  1. Choose or drop the video (MKV, MP4, MOV or WebM).
  2. Pick SRT, WebVTT or Original, and optionally the languages you want.
  3. Press Extract subtitles and wait while the file is read.
  4. Download each subtitle file, or all of them as a ZIP.

Subtitles burned into the picture (always visible, can't be turned off) are part of the image and can't be extracted by any tool without recognising the text frame by frame.

One file per language

Every text track becomes its own file, named after the video and the track's language, such as Movie.eng.srt and Movie.spa.srt, with .forced for tracks that only translate foreign dialogue. Players like VLC, Plex, Kodi and most smart TVs pick these up automatically when they sit next to the video with the same name. Type language codes such as eng, spa to extract only those.

Big films, read in pieces

An MKV keeps subtitle lines spread through the whole file between the video frames, so the tool reads it once from start to end, 8 MB at a time, and keeps only the subtitle lines. A 20 GB film takes a minute or two on a laptop and never fills your memory. MP4 and MOV files have an index, so only the subtitle samples are read, which is almost instant. Nothing is uploaded and the video is not changed.

Then what?

  • Fix timing or typos in any text editor: SRT is plain text.
  • Translate the text, then put it back next to the video.
  • Send the video with its subtitles in one link: up to the site's limit per transfer, in original quality.

Frequently asked questions

How do I extract subtitles from an MKV?

Add the MKV, keep SRT selected and press Extract subtitles. You get one SRT file per subtitle language.

Can I extract subtitles from an MP4?

Yes, when the MP4 or MOV has a text subtitle track (mov_text or WebVTT), which is how phones and most converters store them.

Why are no subtitles found?

The video has no subtitle track, the subtitles are burned into the picture, or they are in a separate file next to the video.

Can it extract Blu-ray PGS subtitles?

No. PGS and VobSub subtitles are images; they would need text recognition frame by frame.

Is the video uploaded?

No. It is read on your device and stays unchanged.
