Quick answer: To restrict a download link by country: upload your files, open More options, go to "Where and on how many devices", choose "Only in these countries" (or "Everywhere except these countries") and add the countries. Tick "Refuse VPNs, proxies and Tor" to block most attempts to hide a location. People elsewhere see a message that the link is not available in their country. Location comes from the visitor's IP address, so it is accurate at country level but not perfect.
How to set a country rule
- Upload your files.
- Open More options and find Where and on how many devices.
- Under Countries, choose Only in these countries or Everywhere except these countries, then type country names (for example India) to add them.
- Optionally tick Refuse VPNs, proxies and Tor and set Devices per person.
- Share the link. Refused visits appear in your transfer's activity with the reason.
How accurate is it?
The country is looked up from the visitor's IP address in a bundled database (DB-IP Lite), with no third-party call. Country-level results are right for the vast majority of home and mobile connections, but no IP database is perfect: travellers, satellite links and some corporate networks can show up in another country. The site owner decides whether visitors whose country cannot be determined are let in.
The VPN option refuses addresses belonging to hosting and data-centre networks, where most commercial VPNs, proxies and Tor exits live. Residential VPNs and a determined person can still get through, so treat it as a strong filter, not a guarantee.
When a country rule helps
| Situation | Rule |
|---|---|
| Film or music licensed for one territory | Only in that country, refuse VPNs |
| Exam paper for an Indian board | Only India, plus a time window |
| Internal documents for staff in two offices | Only those two countries, plus a domain allow-list |
| Files attracting abuse from one region | Everywhere except that country |

Frequently asked questions
Can I make a link work only in India?
Yes. Choose "Only in these countries", add India, and optionally refuse VPNs, proxies and Tor.
Can people bypass the country block with a VPN?
Most commercial VPNs, proxies and Tor are refused when you tick the VPN option. Some residential VPNs may still get through.
What does a blocked person see?
A page saying the link is not available in their country. File names are not shown.
Is the visitor's location sent to another company?
No. The lookup uses a database stored on our server; no third-party service is called.
Is it free?
Yes, for files up to 20 GB per transfer.
