How to Give Each Recipient Their Own Download Link

When one link goes to ten people, you cannot tell who used it, who forwarded it, or cut off one person without cutting off everyone. Personal links solve all three: the same files, one link per person.

Quick answer: Send your files with Get a link. Then on your Transfers page press More on the transfer and choose Personal links. Type a Name (and, if you like, an Email) and press Create link. Each person gets their own address, like sharelargefilesfree.com/Ab3dE9fG?p=…, that opens the same files. The list shows each link's opens, downloads and last use, and Who opened it and Stats show which link was used. Switch any link off without affecting the others, or untick "The main link works too" so only personal links open the files.

  • Agencies and freelancers: one rough cut for five reviewers, where you need to know who has watched it.
  • Confidential documents: if a file turns up somewhere it should not, the activity log shows whose link was used.
  • Changing teams: someone leaves the project, so you switch off their link while everyone else carries on.
  1. Send your files with Get a link.
  2. On your Transfers page, press More on the transfer and choose Personal links.
  3. Enter a Name (for example Priya) and, optionally, an Email, then press Create link.
  4. Press Copy next to each link and send it to that person by chat or email, or press Poster for a printable QR code labelled with their name.
  5. Optional: untick The main link works too, so only the personal links open the files.

The Transfers page shows everything you have sent and what happened to it.

Each entry shows its opens, downloads and when it was last used ("not used yet" until then), with an On/Off switch and Delete.

Example: a rough cut for five reviewers

Sam, a video editor, sends a rough cut with Get a link, then creates personal links for the director, producer, two investors and the composer, and unticks The main link works too. Two days later Stats show four people opened it and three downloaded; the composer has not. One investor's assistant forwarded his link to a friend, which shows up under Who opened it as "via" that investor's link. Sam switches that link off, makes a new one for the investor, and nobody else is affected.

What recipients see

A personal link opens the normal download page, with any password, limits or view only setting you chose. If you switch a link off, its holder sees that the sender switched this personal link off. If the main link is off, anyone using it is told the link now only works through the personal link the sender gave them.

Follow each person

  • Stats has a Personal links section with each link's opens and downloads.
  • Who opened it marks visits with "via Priya", so a forwarded link is visible.
  • The transfer card shows how many personal links exist.
  • If you replace a file, people who downloaded through a personal link that has an email get one email about the new version.

Tip: give links clear names ("Priya, client", "Sam, editor") and add emails where you have them; it makes the activity log readable months later.

OptionBest when
Personal linksA handful of named people, shared over any channel
Send by emailYou have everyone's email; each recipient automatically gets their own link
Anyone who confirms their emailMany or unknown people, each proving their address with a code
One open linkAnyone may have it and totals are enough
  • They are for active link transfers. Email transfers already give each recipient a private link.
  • A personal link can still be forwarded; it tells you whose link was used, not who was holding the phone. Combine it with a per-person download limit or a password when that matters.
  • With the main link off, your short link and download code stop working for others too, since they lead to the main link.
  • There is a maximum number of personal links per transfer; the dialog tells you when you reach it.
  • Deleting a link stops it at once; switching it off does the same but can be undone.

Troubleshooting

  • No Personal links in the More menu: the transfer was sent by email, or it has expired or been stopped.
  • "Create a personal link first": you cannot switch the main link off before at least one personal link exists.
  • Someone says their link stopped working: check its switch is On and the transfer has not expired.
  • A personal link still asks for an email or password: personal links follow the transfer's other rules. Remove those rules if the link alone should be enough.
  • You want to know who someone forwarded to: with Anyone who confirms their email, every visitor through a personal link must also prove their own address, so the log names both.
