Quick answer: Transfers are encrypted in transit with HTTPS and deleted from our servers when they expire after 1 day. You can add a password or have a transfer deleted after its first download; end-to-end encryption is not offered, so encrypt highly sensitive files yourself.

Is it safe to send files online?

Sending files online is generally safe when the connection is encrypted, links are hard to guess, and files do not stay around forever. It becomes risky when links are shared publicly, when sensitive files are sent without extra protection, or when files are kept indefinitely. The measures below are designed to keep everyday transfers private, and you can add more protection when you need it.

What we do to protect transfers

  • Encrypted in transit: uploads and downloads use HTTPS, so files are encrypted while travelling between your device, our servers and your recipient.
  • Link-based access: a transfer can only be reached with its link. Anyone who has the link can download, so share it only with the right people.
  • Optional password: password-protected transfers need both the link and the password.
  • Delete after first download: optional, for files meant for a single recipient.
  • Automatic expiry: links expire after 1 day, and the files are then deleted from our servers.
  • Verified email senders: when you send by email, you confirm your own address with a 6-digit code first.

How long files are stored

Every transfer expires automatically after 1 day. After that, the link stops working and the files are deleted from our servers. You stay in control during that time: on the Transfers page you can delete a transfer early, extend its expiry, resend emails, copy the link and see how many times it has been downloaded.

If you turn on delete after first download, the transfer is removed after it has been downloaded once.

What we do not offer

We would rather be clear than overpromise. Share Large Video Files does not currently offer:

  • End-to-end encryption. Files are encrypted in transit with HTTPS, but they are not encrypted on your device before upload.
  • Accounts, user permissions or audit logs for teams.

We also make no promises about encryption at rest, where data is physically stored, or formal security certifications, so please do not rely on any of these when deciding what to send.

For highly sensitive material, such as medical, legal or financial records, consider encrypting the file yourself before uploading, for example with a password-protected archive using strong encryption, and share that password through a different channel.

Tips for sending files securely

  1. Add a password to anything private, and send the password separately, for example by phone or a different app.
  2. Use delete after first download for one-to-one transfers.
  3. Delete transfers from the Transfers page once the recipient confirms they have the files.
  4. Avoid posting links in public places such as open forums or social media.
  5. Double-check recipient email addresses before sending.

Your files are not altered or analysed

Files are delivered exactly as you uploaded them. We do not compress, re-encode, resize or convert anything, and we do not create previews or streaming versions of your videos. What your recipient downloads is the original file, byte for byte.

There is also no account to create. You do not need to hand over a password or profile to send a file. If you choose to send by email, we use your address to deliver the transfer and to verify you with a 6-digit code; if you choose a link, you can share it however you like.

Because access depends on the link, treat it like a key. Anyone you forward it to can download the files until the transfer expires or is deleted, unless you also set a password. If you think a link has been shared more widely than you intended, delete the transfer from the Transfers page straight away and send a new one.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files encrypted?

Files are encrypted in transit using HTTPS. We do not offer end-to-end encryption, so encrypt highly sensitive files yourself before uploading.

Who can download my files?

Anyone with the link. If you add a password, they also need the password.

How long are files stored?

Transfers expire after 1 day, and the files are then deleted from our servers. You can delete them earlier from the Transfers page.

Can I delete a transfer before it expires?

Yes. Open the Transfers page and delete it, or turn on delete after first download when sending.

Do you change or compress my files?

No. Files are delivered exactly as uploaded.

Why do I need to verify my email when sending by email?

The 6-digit code confirms you own the sender address, which helps prevent the service being used for spam or impersonation.
