Compress a Video Without Uploading It

Shrink MP4, MOV and WebM videos to a size or quality you choose.

By · Last updated

Your files are processed on your device and never uploaded.

Quick answer: To compress a video free, open it here, pick a target file size or a quality level and download the MP4; it is processed in your browser and never uploaded. Balanced quality often makes phone videos 50 to 80 percent smaller, with no watermark, for files up to 2 GB.

Make a video small enough for a chat app, an email or a slow connection. Pick a file size or a quality level, see the estimated result before you start, and get an MP4 that plays everywhere.

How to compress video

  1. Choose or drop your video: MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV.
  2. Pick a target size in MB, or a quality level, and a maximum resolution if you like. The estimated result updates as you change the options.
  3. Press Compress video and watch the progress; you can cancel at any time.
  4. Play the result on the page, then download it or send it with a link.

Two ways to compress

  • A file size: you say how big the file may be (for example 25 MB) and the tool works out the rest. It divides the size by the length of the video to get the bitrate, lowers the resolution if that bitrate would look blocky at full size, and checks the result. If the encoder overshoots, it runs again a little smaller, so the file really fits.
  • A quality level: High, Balanced or Smallest. The size then depends on the video; the page shows an estimate before you start.

Either way the output is an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound, the combination every phone, computer, browser and chat app plays.

What makes a video smaller

SettingEffect on sizeTrade-off
BitrateSize grows in proportion to itToo low looks blocky, especially in motion
Resolution1080p to 720p saves roughly half at the same sharpnessLess detail on big screens
Frame rate60 fps to 30 fps saves around a thirdFast motion is a little less fluid
Sound128 kbps AAC is about 1 MB per minuteRemove it only if nobody needs it

For small targets the tool handles resolution and frame rate for you. Need an exact number for your own encoder? The video bitrate calculator shows the bitrate for any size and length.

Private, and fast on modern devices

Your video is compressed by your own browser using WebCodecs, the same video engine your browser uses for video calls, with hardware acceleration where your device has it. The file never leaves your device: there is no upload queue, no server copy and no watermark. The file is read in pieces, so even long videos work; very large files are faster on a computer than on an older phone.

Works in current Chrome, Edge, Safari (17 or newer) and Firefox (130 or newer). If your browser cannot do it, the page tells you instead of producing a broken file.

When not to compress

Compression always throws away some detail. If you are sending footage to an editor, a client or a printer, send the original instead: share it with a link, free up to 20 GB, in full quality. See how to send large video files.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my video get?

Phone videos are recorded at a high bitrate, so Balanced quality often makes them 50 to 80 percent smaller. With a target size you decide exactly: the result lands just under the size you pick.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. It is compressed inside your browser on your own device and never uploaded. Only if you choose Send with a link afterwards is the result uploaded to share it.

Is there a watermark or a length limit?

No watermark and no fixed length limit. Files up to 2 GB can be opened; very long videos simply take longer, and a target size that is too small for a long video is flagged before you start.

Which formats can I compress?

MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM, MKV and MPEG-TS files with H.264, HEVC, VP8, VP9 or AV1 video. HEVC (the iPhone default) needs a browser that can decode it, such as Safari or Chrome on Windows and macOS. The result is always an MP4.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in Safari 17 or newer on iPhone and iPad and in Chrome on Android. Phones are slower than computers for long videos, so keep the tab open until it finishes.
