Quick answer: Video file size is bitrate times length: 1080p H.264 at 8 Mbps is about 3.6 GB per hour, and 4K ProRes 422 HQ at 29.97 fps about 6.6 GB per minute. Choose the codec, resolution, frame rate and length here to plan storage or an upload.

How to use the video file size calculator
- Pick the codec: a ProRes flavour, H.264, H.265 or your own bitrate.
- Choose the resolution and frame rate, and the audio if you want it counted.
- Enter the length of the video and your upload speed.
- Read the size, the GB per minute and hour and the upload time; copy the link to share it.
Apple ProRes data rates
ProRes aims at a fixed number of bits per frame, so its file sizes are predictable. These are Apple's published target data rates at 29.97 fps (from the Apple ProRes white paper); the calculator scales them by frame rate and frame size the same way the white paper's tables do.
| Codec | 1080p, Mbps | 1080p, GB per hour | 4K UHD, Mbps | 4K UHD, GB per hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ProRes 422 Proxy | 45 | 20 | 182 | 82 |
| ProRes 422 LT | 102 | 46 | 409 | 184 |
| ProRes 422 | 147 | 66 | 589 | 265 |
| ProRes 422 HQ | 220 | 99 | 884 | 398 |
| ProRes 4444 | 330 | 149 | 1326 | 597 |
| ProRes 4444 XQ | 500 | 225 | 1989 | 895 |
Video only, 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. At 25 fps multiply by about 0.83; at 59.94 fps double it. ProRes 4444 figures are without an alpha channel.
H.264 and H.265 sizes
H.264 and H.265 have no fixed rate: the encoder setting decides. For H.264 the calculator uses YouTube's recommended upload bitrates for standard-range video, a good reference for a high-quality export: 8 Mbps for 1080p at 24 to 30 fps, 12 Mbps at 48 to 60 fps, 35 to 45 Mbps for 4K (we use 40) and 53 to 68 Mbps for 4K at 60 fps. H.265 (HEVC) typically reaches similar quality with 30 to 50% less data, so it is shown at 60% of the H.264 figure, as an estimate. Know your exact bitrate? Choose Custom bitrate.
From size to upload time
File size in gigabytes × 8,000 ÷ upload speed in Mbps = seconds. A 100 GB ProRes shoot at 50 Mbps upload takes about 4.5 hours before overhead; the calculator adds 10% for that. Frequently asked questions
How big is one minute of 4K ProRes 422 HQ?
About 6.6 GB at 29.97 fps (884 Mbps), or 5.5 GB at 25 fps. An hour is about 398 GB at 29.97 fps.
How many GB per hour is 1080p H.264?
At 8 Mbps, YouTube's recommendation for 1080p at 30 fps, it is about 3.6 GB per hour, plus around 58 MB for 128 kbps AAC sound.
Why does my file differ from the calculator?
H.264 and H.265 depend on your encoder settings and the content; ProRes also varies a little with the image. Use the result for planning, with some headroom.
