Quick answer: 1600 × 900 pixels (16:9) is the commonly recommended size for single images in posts on X, and X suggests 1500 × 500 for the header and 400 × 400 for the profile photo. Pick a size here, choose crop or fit, and download a JPG, resized in your browser.

Make images fit the shapes X shows best, so your post is not cropped in the timeline and your header does not lose its edges. Crop to fill or keep the whole picture on a blurred background.

Recommended X image sizes

WhereShapeRecommended size
Single image in a post16:91600 × 900 px
Square image in a post1:11200 × 1200 px
Header3:11500 × 500 px
Profile photo1:1, shown as a circle400 × 400 px

These are recommendations, not requirements: X accepts other sizes and scales or crops them for display. The header and profile sizes are the ones X's help pages suggest, 1200 × 1200 matches X's ad specifications for square images, and 1600 × 900 is the widely recommended size for a single landscape image. X changes its layout from time to time, so a preview before posting is always worth a look.

Why 16:9 avoids the crop

In the timeline X shows a preview of each image, and a very tall or very wide picture may be cut to fit that preview until someone taps it. A 16:9 image generally fits the preview as it is. With Fit, blurred background, a portrait photo or a screenshot is placed whole in the 16:9 frame, with a blurred copy filling the sides, so nothing important sits outside the preview.

Posts with two to four images are arranged in a grid and cropped differently, so for those keep the subject in the middle of each picture.

Header and profile photo

The 3:1 header is wide and gets partly covered by your profile photo in the lower left, and it is shown at different widths on phones and computers. Use Crop to fill and a picture whose interesting part is in the middle band. The profile photo is shown as a circle, so keep your face in the centre.
