Instagram displays posts 1080 pixels wide. Uploading exactly that size means the app does not have to resize (and re-compress) your photo as much, and you decide the crop instead of the app.

Keep the whole photo with a blurred background

A landscape holiday photo does not fit a portrait post: Instagram would force you to crop it. With Fit, blurred background, the entire photo is placed in the middle of the 4:5 frame and the empty space above and below is filled with a soft, blurred version of the same picture. It fills the feed without cutting anyone out.

Prefer a clean crop? Choose Crop to fill, which keeps the centre of the image. For Stories, remember the top and bottom 250 pixels or so are partly covered by Instagram's buttons, so keep text and faces in the middle.

From your phone, privately

This page works in Safari and Chrome on your phone: choose photos from your library, resize, and save them back. The resizing happens on your device, so your photos are never uploaded to us. iPhone HEIC photos are accepted and saved as JPG, the format Instagram prefers.

Sending the full-resolution originals to a client or collaborator as well? Share RAW photos explains how to do it without compression.
