Quick answer: To resize an image for Facebook, pick the slot: cover photo (1640 × 624, twice the 820 × 312 desktop display), square post (1080 × 1080), portrait post (1080 × 1350), link preview (1200 × 630) or profile picture (720 × 720). Choose crop or a blurred-background fit, and download a JPG. Nothing is uploaded.

Facebook crops pictures that do not match its shapes, and cover photos are cropped differently on computers and phones. Pick the slot, choose what to keep, and upload an image that fits.

Facebook changes its layouts from time to time; if a slot looks cropped, check its current recommendation in Facebook's help centre.

The cover photo on phones

On computers the cover is a wide strip, about 820 × 312. On phones Facebook shows a taller, narrower part of the same image, about 640 × 360, so the left and right edges are cut off and the profile picture covers part of the bottom left. Keep faces, logos and text in the centre third and away from the bottom left corner.

Sharper uploads

Facebook recompresses every image. Uploading at exactly the size it displays, as a good-quality JPG, leaves it less to change. For graphics with text, PNG can look crisper after Facebook's compression: choose PNG under Save as. For Instagram and other networks, see Resize image for Instagram and for LinkedIn.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a Facebook cover photo?

It displays at 820 × 312 pixels on computers and about 640 × 360 on phones. Uploading 1640 × 624 keeps it sharp; keep the important part in the middle.

What is the best size for a Facebook post?

1080 × 1080 for square posts or 1080 × 1350 for portrait posts, which take up more of the mobile feed.

What size is the image when I share a link?

Link previews use a 1.91:1 shape; 1200 × 630 pixels is the common size for the image a web page supplies.

How do I fit a photo without cropping it?

Choose Fit, blurred background: the whole photo is shown on a blurred copy of itself.

Is my photo uploaded?

No, not to us. It is resized in your browser; you upload it to Facebook yourself.
