Quick answer: To crop an image to a square, open it here: the crop box is already set to 1:1. Drag it to the part you want, resize it from the corners, press Apply crop and save. Use the Resize tab for an exact size such as 1080 × 1080. The photo is edited in your browser and never uploaded.
Profile pictures, product photos, album covers and grid posts all want a square. The crop box is already locked to 1:1: drag it over the part you want and save.

Where squares are used
| Use | Common size |
|---|---|
| Profile pictures (most apps) | 400 × 400 to 1080 × 1080, shown as a circle |
| Social media square posts | 1080 × 1080 |
| Online shop product photos | 1000 × 1000 to 2048 × 2048 |
| Album and podcast covers | 3000 × 3000 |
Check the app's own requirement when the size matters; the shape is what counts most.
Square without cutting anything off
Cropping always removes the long edges of a photo. To keep the whole picture in a square instead, use Resize image with the Square 1080 × 1080 preset and Fit, blurred background, or Resize image for Instagram.
For round profile pictures
Apps show the square as a circle, which cuts off the corners. Leave a little space around the face and keep it centred. After cropping you can also straighten the photo in the Rotate tab and brighten it in Adjust. Everything happens in your browser; for other ratios use Crop image.
