Why photos turn up sideways

Phones save many photos the way the sensor sees them and add an “orientation” note telling apps to turn them. Some websites, email programs and older software ignore that note, so the photo appears sideways there even though it looks right on your phone.

Rotating here solves it for good: the photo is opened the right way up, turned as you choose and saved with the pixels themselves upright, so every app shows it the same way.

Flip versus rotate

  • Rotate turns the whole picture by 90°, like turning a print on a table.
  • Flip horizontal mirrors left and right: front-camera selfies where writing appears back to front, or to make a subject face into a layout.
  • Flip vertical mirrors top and bottom, for photos of reflections or scans fed in upside down.

Rotating a PDF instead?

Scanned pages in a PDF are turned with Rotate PDF, which keeps the text and quality of every page. For a photo you need as a PDF, rotate it here first, then use JPG to PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Does rotating a JPG reduce its quality?

The photo is saved once at 92% quality, which looks identical. For zero change choose PNG, or raise the quality to 100%.

Can I rotate by any angle, like 5 degrees?

No, only in 90° steps. For a slightly tilted horizon, crop tighter after rotating.

How do I un-mirror a selfie?

Press Flip horizontal once and save.

Is the photo uploaded?

No. It is rotated on your device.
