Blur Faces and Details in a Photo

Hide faces, number plates and personal details.

By · Last updated

Your files are processed on your device and never uploaded.

Before you post or send a picture, hide what others should not see: faces of bystanders or children, a car's number plate, a name, an address, an account number in a screenshot. You drag a box over it; the pixels under it are replaced.

How to blur image

  1. Choose or drop the photo or screenshot.
  2. Pick Blur, Pixelate or Black box and the strength.
  3. Drag a box over each face, plate or detail to hide.
  4. Press Save blurred image, check the result, then download or send it.

Blur, pixelate or black box?

  • Blur looks the softest, good for faces in the background of a photo.
  • Pixelate turns the area into large squares: the classic look for number plates and faces on the news.
  • Black box is the safest for text such as names, addresses, card or account numbers: nothing of the original remains.

Use a high strength for anything sensitive. Weak blurs of short text can sometimes be guessed by comparing with known fonts, which is why a black box is recommended for numbers and names.

Really gone, not just covered

Some apps put a blur “layer” over a photo that can be removed later. Here, the area is replaced in the saved image itself: the result is a normal JPG or PNG in which the hidden pixels no longer exist. Your original file is untouched on your device, so keep it private or delete it if needed.

Photos also carry hidden details such as GPS location and the phone model. To strip those as well, run the result through Remove image metadata; images saved by this editor already contain none.

Blurred on your device

A photo you want to anonymise is exactly the kind you should not upload to an unknown website. This tool runs in your browser and never sends the picture anywhere, so the faces and details you are hiding are never seen by anyone but you.

Frequently asked questions

Can blurred areas be restored?

Not from the saved file: the original pixels in those areas are replaced. Use a black box for text you must hide completely.

Does it find faces automatically?

No. You mark each area yourself, which means nothing is missed by a detector and no face recognition runs on your photo.

Can I blur several areas?

Yes. Drag as many boxes as you need; Undo removes the last one.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Everything happens on your device.
