WhatsApp crops profile pictures to a square and shows them as a circle, and Status fills a tall 9:16 screen. Make your photo fit first, so nothing important gets cut off.

Full photo as your WhatsApp DP
WhatsApp makes you pick a square area of your photo for the profile picture, then shows it as a circle. With a group photo or a wide landscape that means cutting people out. Here the whole photo is placed in a square with a blurred version of itself filling the gaps, so the entire picture stays visible. The square is 640 × 640 pixels: sharp on every phone, small enough to upload quickly.
Because the preview is round, the corners of the square are hidden. Keep faces and text near the centre.
Status without black bars or zoom
WhatsApp Status fills the phone screen in a tall 9:16 shape. A normal photo either gets black bars or is zoomed in. Resizing to 1080 × 1920 with a blurred background gives a full-screen Status that still shows the whole photo. Choose Crop to fill instead if you want the photo itself to fill the screen.
Sending photos in full quality
WhatsApp compresses photos sent in chats unless you choose its HD option, and even HD is reduced. To send originals, for example wedding photos to family, send them with a link: see sending large files from Android and from iPhone, or our overview of file size limits in popular apps. The resizing on this page happens on your phone; nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions
What size is a WhatsApp profile picture?
It is square and shown as a circle. 640 × 640 pixels looks sharp everywhere; WhatsApp scales it down for small previews.
How do I set a full photo as my DP without cropping?
Resize it here with “Fit, blurred background”. The whole photo sits in the square, so WhatsApp has nothing to crop.
What size is WhatsApp Status?
Status uses the phone screen shape, 9:16. 1080 × 1920 pixels fills it exactly.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. It is resized on your device and saved to your downloads.
