Rotate a Video

Turn a sideways video upright in seconds, no re-encoding.

By · Last updated

Your files are processed on your device and never uploaded.

Filmed sideways? Turn the video 90° left or right, or 180°, and see it on the preview first. For MP4 and MOV the rotation is saved in the file without re-encoding, so it takes seconds and the quality stays exactly the same.

How to rotate video

  1. Choose or drop the video.
  2. Pick 90° right, 90° left or 180°; the preview turns with it.
  3. Keep “Fast”, or choose “Re-encode” for an old app that ignores rotation.
  4. Press Rotate video, check it, then download or send it.

Fast rotation, explained

Phones never turn the pixels of a video: they store the picture as the sensor saw it and add a rotation flag that tells players how to show it. This tool does the same: for MP4 and MOV it copies the video and sound unchanged and writes the new rotation flag. That is lossless and instant, and phones, browsers, VLC, WhatsApp, YouTube and Instagram all honour it.

When to re-encode

  • An old program or TV shows the video sideways even after the fast rotation.
  • The file is WebM or MKV (these always re-encode).
  • You also mirror the video: flips are always baked into the picture.

Re-encoding turns the pixels themselves at a high bitrate, at about real time on a phone. To mirror a selfie video, use Flip video.

Frequently asked questions

Does rotating a video lose quality?

Not with Fast rotation: the video is copied unchanged and only the rotation flag changes. Re-encoding uses a high bitrate that looks the same.

Why is my video still sideways in one app?

A few old apps ignore the rotation flag. Rotate again with “Re-encode the picture”.

Can I rotate an iPhone video?

Yes, including HEVC videos in any browser with the fast method, since nothing needs decoding.

Is my video uploaded?

No. It is rotated on your device.
