Rotate an Upside-Down Video 180°

Fix a video that was filmed or saved upside down.

Your files are processed on your device and never uploaded.

Quick answer: To fix an upside-down video, open it here, keep 180° and press Rotate 180°. For MP4 and MOV the Fast method stores the rotation as a flag and copies the video without re-encoding, so it is instant and lossless. Rotating is not the same as flipping: text stays readable. Nothing is uploaded.

A phone held the wrong way round, a camera mounted upside down, a dashcam or a doorbell cam: turn the picture the right way up in a few seconds.

How to rotate video 180°

  2. Keep 180°; the preview shows the result.
  3. Press Rotate 180°.
  4. Download the video, now the right way up.

Rotate 180° or flip upside down?

They look similar but are different:

  • Rotate 180° turns the whole picture round, like turning a photo on the table. Text and left and right stay correct. This is what you need when the camera was upside down.
  • Flip upside down mirrors top and bottom only, so text becomes mirrored. You only need it for footage recorded through a mirror or a periscope-style mount.

Both options are on this page; to mirror left and right for selfie videos, see Flip video.

Why videos end up upside down

Phones store which way up they were held as a rotation flag in the file. If the phone was held with the camera at the bottom, or the orientation sensor was locked, the flag can be wrong. Action cameras and dashcams mounted upside down often record the picture as it hits the sensor. Either way, rotating 180° corrects it.

Fast and lossless where possible

For MP4 and MOV files the Fast method writes the rotation into the file as a flag that phones, browsers, VLC and the big video sites respect, and copies the video without re-encoding: instant and lossless. If an app you use ignores that flag, choose Re-encode the picture to turn the pixels themselves. WebM and MKV files are always re-encoded. All of it runs in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn an upside-down video the right way up?

Open it here, keep 180° and press Rotate 180°. Download the result.

Does rotating reduce quality?

Not with the Fast method for MP4 and MOV: the video is copied and only a rotation flag changes. Re-encoding, needed for WebM, MKV or apps that ignore the flag, uses a high bitrate.

My video is sideways, not upside down. What now?

Pick 90° right or 90° left instead of 180°, or use Rotate video.

Is the video uploaded?

No. It is rotated in your browser.
