Convert AVIF to JPG

Open AVIF images in apps and forms that only take JPG.

By · Last updated

Your files are processed on your device and never uploaded.

Quick answer: To convert AVIF to JPG, choose the AVIF images, keep the quality at 90% and press Convert to JPG; transparent areas become white or black. Your browser decodes the AVIF itself (Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16.4 or newer), so nothing is uploaded. Expect the JPG to be larger than the AVIF.

Saved a picture and got an .avif file that your editor, email or upload form refuses? Convert it to a standard JPG in seconds, several at a time, right in your browser.

What AVIF is, and why JPG still matters

AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. Websites use it because it is often half the size of a JPG at the same quality, and newer phones and cameras can save it too. But plenty of software was never updated for it: older versions of Photoshop and Office, many photo printers, email clients, and upload forms that accept only JPG or PNG. JPG opens everywhere.

Size and quality

Converting cannot add detail that the AVIF did not have, and JPG needs more bytes for the same picture, so the JPG is usually 2 to 3 times larger than the AVIF. 90% quality keeps it visually identical; if the result is too big for a form, use Compress image to 100 KB afterwards. Need transparency? Convert to PNG with Convert image instead.

Browser support

The AVIF is decoded by your browser, which works in current Chrome, Edge and Firefox and in Safari 16.4 or newer (iOS 16.4 or newer on iPhone). On an older browser you will see a clear message instead of a broken file. Nothing is uploaded at any point.

Current browsers open AVIF directly. To use it in other apps, convert it to JPG here.

Why is the JPG bigger than the AVIF?

Does it work on iPhone?

Yes, on iOS 16.4 or newer in Safari or Chrome.

Are my images uploaded?

No. They are converted in your browser.
