Which format should you convert to?

Convert toChoose it when
JPGThe image is a photo, or it must open anywhere: forms, email, old software, printers.
PNGThe image has text, sharp lines or a transparent background, or you will keep editing it.
WebPThe image is for a website: smaller than JPG at the same quality, with transparency.

Converting to JPG fills transparent areas with white (or black, if you prefer), because JPG cannot store transparency.

Quick links for common conversions

Good to know

  • Animated GIFs and animated WebP images are converted as a still image (the first frame).
  • Converting cannot add quality that was not there: a small, blurry JPG stays small and blurry as a PNG.
  • Safari cannot create WebP files. If you pick WebP in Safari, you get a JPG and a note; Chrome, Edge and Firefox create WebP.
  • Metadata such as GPS location is not copied into the converted file.

All conversion happens on your device, so the images are never uploaded.
