Quick answer: A ZIP file is an archive that bundles many files and folders into one, usually with lossless compression, and opens on Windows and macOS without extra software.

ZIP file explained

A ZIP file is a single file that holds other files and folders, usually compressed so it takes less space. The format dates back to 1989 and is the most widely supported archive type: Windows File Explorer and macOS Finder can both create and open ZIP files.

Zipping is great for sending many files as one download and for keeping folder structure. It saves space on documents and text, but photos, videos and music are already compressed, so they barely shrink.

ZIP files can be password protected. Choose AES-256 encryption if your tool offers it, because the older ZipCrypto method is weak.

How to make and open a ZIP

  • Windows: select the files, right-click and choose Compress to ZIP file (on older versions, Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder). Double-click a ZIP to look inside, or right-click and choose Extract All.
  • Mac: select the files, right-click and choose Compress. Double-click a ZIP to unpack it.
  • iPhone and iPad: in the Files app, touch and hold, then choose Compress. Tap a ZIP to unpack it.
  • Any device: the zip and unzip tools on this site work in the browser, without installing anything.

What shrinks and what does not

File typeEffect of zipping
Text, CSV, logs, codeOften shrinks a lot
Word and Excel filesLittle: modern Office files are already zipped inside
JPG, HEIC, MP4, MOV, MP3Almost nothing
Uncompressed audio (WAV), BMP, some RAW filesSome saving, varies

Example: a folder with 500 MB of holiday photos and videos becomes a ZIP of roughly 500 MB. The benefit is one tidy download, not a smaller file.

Common problems and fixes

  • Windows cannot open a password-protected ZIP: File Explorer does not handle AES-256 ZIPs. Use 7-Zip or WinRAR.
  • A very large ZIP will not open: the original ZIP format stops at 4 GB. Modern tools use the ZIP64 extension to go beyond that, but very old software may fail.
  • A __MACOSX folder appears: Macs add hidden extra data to ZIPs. It is harmless and can be deleted on Windows.

Frequently asked questions

Will zipping a video make it smaller?

Hardly. Video is already compressed, so a ZIP saves very little. Use a video compressor if you need a smaller file.

Can a ZIP file be password protected?

Yes. Use AES-256 encryption and share the password through a different channel than the file.

Is there a size limit for ZIP files?

Classic ZIP tops out at 4 GB, but the ZIP64 extension used by modern tools allows much larger archives. Very old software may not open them.

Do I need to zip a folder before uploading it?

Not always, but zipping keeps the folder structure and gives the recipient one file to download instead of many.
