Quick answer: HEIC is the photo format iPhones use by default, storing images with HEVC compression so they take up much less space than JPEG at similar quality.

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) explained

HEIC is the image format iPhones use to save photos by default. It is Apple's name for pictures stored in the HEIF format with HEVC compression, and iPhones have used it since iOS 11. A HEIC photo is often around half the size of a JPEG that looks the same, and it can hold extras like depth data and Live Photo frames.

The catch is compatibility. Macs, iPhones and most recent Android phones open HEIC without trouble, but Windows needs the free HEIF Image Extensions, and some websites, older apps and printing services still reject it.

When you send HEIC photos, ask what the recipient uses. For Windows users or print shops, convert to JPG first. If you prefer JPG from the start, set Settings > Camera > Formats to Most Compatible on the iPhone.

For photos you are sending to someone else, JPG is the safe middle ground. PNG only makes sense for photos when the recipient specifically needs a lossless file, because converting a HEIC to PNG makes it much bigger without adding any detail.

Worked example: sending 200 iPhone photos

Suppose each HEIC photo is about 2 MB. Two hundred of them come to 200 × 2 MB = 400 MB. Converted to high-quality JPG, each might be roughly twice the size, so about 200 × 4 MB = 800 MB.

Either way, that is far beyond a typical 20 to 25 MB email attachment limit. The practical options are:

  • Recipient has a Mac, iPhone or recent Android: send the HEIC originals in one download link. Smaller upload, full quality.
  • Recipient uses Windows or needs prints: convert to JPG first, then send the JPGs in one link.
  • Not sure: send the HEIC originals and add a few JPG copies so they can check the photos straight away.

Common problems and fixes

  • The file will not open on Windows: install HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, or convert to JPG.
  • A website rejects the upload: many upload forms only accept JPG or PNG. Convert a copy to JPG.
  • Live Photo motion is missing: the moving part is stored as a separate short video. A plain HEIC or JPG copy only keeps the still image.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a HEIC file on Windows?

Install the free HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, or convert the file to JPG with a converter.

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

A little, because JPEG is also a lossy format. At a high quality setting the difference is very hard to see.

Can Android phones open HEIC photos?

Most recent Android phones can, but older phones and some apps cannot. If you are unsure, send JPG copies as well.

Will my photos stay HEIC if I send them with a download link?

Yes. A download link delivers the files exactly as you uploaded them, so convert to JPG first if the recipient needs JPG.
