Split Audio Automatically at Silences

Cut recordings into tracks automatically at the pauses.

Your files are processed on your device and never uploaded.

Quick answer: To split audio by silence, open the recording, keep the threshold at −40 dB and the shortest pause at 0.7 seconds, and press Split at silences. Every pause longer than that starts a new file, and you can remove the silence between parts. Parts in the input's format are copied without re-encoding. Nothing is uploaded.

A digitised record, a concert or a set of voice memos in one long file? Let the tool find the pauses and cut the recording into separate tracks for you.

How to split audio by silence

  1. Choose the long recording.
  2. Keep −40 dB and 0.7 seconds, or adjust them: see the table below.
  3. Tick Remove the silence between parts if you want tight tracks.
  4. Press Split at silences, check the parts, and download them as a ZIP.

Tuning the detection

Two settings decide where the cuts go:

RecordingSilence is quieter thanShortest pause
Vinyl or cassette with surface noise−30 dB1.5 to 2 seconds
Music album or live set−40 dB1 to 2 seconds
Speech, dictation, lessons−40 dB0.7 to 1 second
Clean studio or digital audio−50 to −60 dB0.5 seconds

Too many parts? Make the shortest pause longer. Too few? Raise the threshold (−30 dB) so noisier gaps count as silence.

Songs with quiet passages

A song that fades to near silence in the middle can be split in two. Set the shortest pause longer than any quiet passage, typically 2 seconds for albums, and the gaps between tracks will still be found. For full control, switch the Split setting to At times I mark and place the cuts yourself.

Quality and formats

Parts saved in the same format as the input (MP3 to MP3, AAC to M4A) are copied without re-encoding; other combinations are decoded and encoded. Detection runs on the decoded sound in your browser, so long files take a little while to analyse.
