Quick answer: To cut an MP3, open it here, set the start and end (type the times or press Use current position while it plays) and press Cut MP3. Without fades the part is copied frame by frame, so there is no quality loss and it takes a moment; with fades it is re-encoded. Nothing is uploaded.

Keep the chorus, drop the intro, cut an interview down to the quote you need. Play the MP3, mark the start and end, and save the part as a new MP3.

How to use the MP3 cutter

  1. Choose the MP3.
  2. Play it and press Use current position at the start and at the end, or type the times.
  3. Add a fade in or fade out if the cut sounds abrupt.
  4. Press Cut MP3 and download the new file.

A lossless cut

An MP3 is a chain of small frames of about 26 milliseconds each. Without fades, this tool copies the frames between your start and end unchanged, so the part sounds exactly like the original and keeps its bitrate. The cut lands on the nearest frame boundary, which nobody can hear.

With a fade in or out, the samples have to change, so that part is decoded and the result re-encoded as MP3 at the quality you pick.

Clean cuts

  • Cut in a pause for speech: play, stop at the gap and press Use current position.
  • Add a short fade of 0.5 to 2 seconds when you cut music mid-phrase, so it does not click or stop dead.
  • Times with decimals work too, for example 1:12.5.

Ringtones, several parts, other formats

For a phone ringtone use Make a ringtone, which also saves iPhone M4R. To cut one MP3 into several files, use Split audio. For WAV, M4A or other formats, Trim audio is the same tool with all formats.
