How to use the ringtone maker

  1. Choose a song, recording or video.
  2. Play it and press “Use current position” where the ringtone should start; set the length (up to 30 s).
  3. Pick iPhone (M4R) or Android (MP3) and the fades.
  4. Press Make ringtone, listen, then download it and follow the steps below for your phone.

Put it on an iPhone

  1. Make an M4R here on your computer and download it.
  2. Connect the iPhone. On a Mac open Finder (on Windows, iTunes or the Apple Devices app) and select the iPhone.
  3. Drag the .m4r file onto the iPhone in that window; it is added to Tones.
  4. On the iPhone: Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone, and pick it.

Apple's limit is 40 seconds for ringtones (30 for text tones), so this tool keeps ringtones to 30 seconds, which works for both.

Put it on an Android phone

  1. Make an MP3 here on the phone (it goes to Downloads), or copy it to the phone's Ringtones folder.
  2. Settings → Sound → Phone ringtone → the + or “My sounds”, and pick the file.

Menus differ a little between Samsung, Pixel and other phones.

What M4R is

An M4R is AAC audio in an MPEG-4 file, the same as an M4A, with the extension Apple uses for ringtones. The ringtone is cut and encoded in your browser, so the song is not uploaded. For longer clips, use Trim audio.
