How to compress JPEG
- Choose your JPG photos.
- Set the quality; 75–80% keeps photos looking as they did.
- Optionally cap the width or height, which saves the most.
- Press Compress JPEGs and download or send the smaller photos.
What the quality slider does in a JPG
JPEG divides a photo into small blocks and stores each one with less precision as the quality goes down. Fine textures such as grass or hair lose some sharpness first; smooth areas such as sky stay clean until the quality is quite low. For photos viewed on screens, 75 to 80 percent is the sweet spot: the file is typically half the size or less and the difference is hard to see.
Below about 60 percent you may notice blocky patches in skies and soft edges around text. If you need files that small, reducing the pixel size gives better-looking results than pushing the quality down.
Re-saving a JPG: when it helps
Photos straight from a camera or phone are saved at very high quality, often 90 to 95 percent, so re-saving them at 78 percent saves a lot. Images that were already compressed by a website or chat app save much less, and may even grow. The tool checks this for you and keeps the original if the new file would not be smaller.
The compressed copy also drops EXIF metadata such as the camera model and GPS position, and applies the photo's rotation so it displays upright everywhere.
Other formats
For PNG screenshots and graphics use Compress PNG. For a mix of formats, or to switch photos to the smaller WebP format, use Compress image. iPhone photos in HEIC format can be turned into JPG first with HEIC to JPG.
