Change the Speed of a Video

Slow motion or time-lapse, 0.25× to 4×, sound included.

Make a time-lapse of a long recording, slow down a moment, or play a tutorial at 1.5×. The picture is usually copied without re-encoding, and the sound keeps its natural pitch (or not, if you prefer the effect).

How to change video speed

  1. Choose or drop a video.
  2. Pick a speed from 0.25× to 4×.
  3. Choose what happens to the sound: keep the pitch, let it follow the speed, or remove it.
  4. Press Change speed, watch the result, then download or send it.

How it works

The compressed frames are copied with new timestamps, so the picture is not re-encoded: a 30 fps clip at 2× becomes 60 fps, at 0.5× 15 fps. Only when the result would go above 60 fps (for example 4× of a 30 fps clip) is the video re-encoded and frames skipped to a smooth 30 or 60 fps.

Slow motion shows each frame longer; the tool does not invent in-between frames. For silky slow motion, start from a video recorded at 60, 120 or 240 fps.

The sound

  • Keep the pitch: time-stretched with WSOLA, voices sound natural. Best between 0.5× and 2×; at extremes it can sound slightly echoey.
  • Pitch follows the speed: like a tape played faster or slower (chipmunk or deep voice), with no stretching artefacts.
  • Remove the sound: for time-lapses where the sound is just noise.

Frequently asked questions

Does changing the speed reduce quality?

Usually not: up to 60 fps in the result the frames are copied unchanged. Above that the video is re-encoded at a high bitrate.

Can I speed up a video without the chipmunk voice?

Yes, that is the default: “Keep the pitch” time-stretches the sound.

How slow can I go?

Down to 0.25×, four times slower. Smooth slow motion needs a video recorded at a high frame rate.

Is my video uploaded?

No. It is processed in your browser.
