How to Send Large Files From iPhone to Mac

For your own Mac next to you, AirDrop is usually best. A link is handy when AirDrop will not connect, or the Mac belongs to someone far away.

Quick answer: If the iPhone and Mac are close together, AirDrop is usually the quickest option. When it fails or the Mac is somewhere else, upload the file at Share Large Files Free (up to 20 GB per transfer) and open the download link on the Mac. The file arrives in the Downloads folder unchanged.

Built-in options, and their limits

AirDrop sends files directly between an iPhone and a nearby Mac. It needs Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, and the Mac must be visible to you in AirDrop settings.

With a cable, you can import photos and videos with the Photos or Image Capture app, and copy app files through the iPhone's page in Finder.

iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive sync automatically, but large libraries need paid iCloud storage and time to upload.

  1. On the iPhone, open Share Large Files Free in Safari.
  2. Add files from Photo Library, or choose Browse to pick them from the Files app.
  3. Keep the screen on until the upload completes, then copy the link or show the QR code.
  4. On the Mac, open the link in Safari, Chrome or another browser.
  5. Click Download. The file is saved to the Downloads folder, and ZIP archives open with a double-click.

Things that trip people up

  • AirDrop can fail silently with very large batches. If it stalls, sending fewer files at a time, or using a link, often helps.
  • Picking photos through Safari's photo picker can convert HEIC to JPG. Macs open HEIC fine, so if you want the original, pick the file via Browse instead.
  • ProRes and 4K videos from recent iPhones are very large. Check you have enough free space on the Mac first.
  • Low Power Mode on the iPhone can slow the upload. Turn it off during big transfers.

Frequently asked questions

Why is AirDrop not showing my Mac?

Both devices need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, and the Mac's AirDrop must allow Contacts Only or Everyone. If it still does not appear, a download link is a reliable fallback.

Can I send to someone else's Mac far away?

Yes. AirDrop only works nearby, but a download link works anywhere with an internet connection.

Do Macs open HEIC photos?

Yes. macOS opens HEIC and HEVC natively, so you usually do not need to convert iPhone photos or videos for a Mac.
