How to Send Large Files From an iPad to a Mac

An iPad and a Mac on the same Apple Account have several ways to swap files. Which one is best depends on whether the Mac is on your desk or somewhere else.

Quick answer: If the Mac is next to you, AirDrop the file or drag it across with Universal Control. If the Mac is elsewhere, or belongs to someone else, upload the file at Share Large Video Files (up to 20 GB per transfer) and open the download link on the Mac. The file arrives in Downloads unchanged.

Built-in options, and their limits

AirDrop sends files directly to a nearby Mac, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on at both ends.

Universal Control lets one keyboard and mouse work across a Mac and an iPad signed in to the same Apple Account, and you can drag files between them in apps that support it.

With a cable, the iPad appears in Finder: its Files tab copies documents in and out of apps that support file sharing. iCloud Drive syncs files between both devices if you have the storage.

  1. On the iPad, open Share Large Video Files in Safari and add the files from Photo Library or Browse.
  2. Keep Safari on screen until the upload finishes, then copy the link.
  3. Send the link by Messages or email, or show the QR code to the Mac owner's phone.
  4. On the Mac, open the link and click Download. The file goes to Downloads.

Things that trip people up

  • AirDrop to another person's Mac needs their AirDrop set to accept from Contacts Only or Everyone; if they cannot see you, a link avoids the settings hunt.
  • Universal Control needs both devices on the same Apple Account, close together, with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Handoff on.
  • iCloud Drive counts every file against your iCloud storage; a 20 GB export will not sync on the free 5 GB plan.
  • Files exported from LumaFusion, Final Cut Pro for iPad or Procreate must be exported first; the project inside the app is not a file you can send.

Sending iPad video edits for review

Editors working on an iPad often need a client, not their own Mac, to see the cut. Upload the export, open More options and tick Client review: the client comments at the exact second of the video and approves or asks for changes. See client proofing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest way from iPad to Mac?

For a Mac in the same room, AirDrop or a USB-C cable with Finder. A download link is better when the Mac is somewhere else or AirDrop will not connect.

Can I drag files from iPad to Mac?

Yes, with Universal Control, when both are signed in to the same Apple Account and near each other. It works in apps that support drag and drop.

Why can't the Mac see my iPad in AirDrop?

Check that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on, Personal Hotspot is off, and the Mac's AirDrop is set to Contacts Only or Everyone. Otherwise send a link.

Is a link slower than AirDrop?

Usually, since the file goes up to the internet and back down. It wins when the Mac is not nearby, or for several recipients at once.
