File sharing for podcasters

Remote interviews sound best when each person records locally. Then those recordings, often hundreds of MB each, have to reach the editor.

Quick answer: An hour of mono WAV at 24-bit 48 kHz is about 520 MB per speaker, and a video podcast is several GB per camera. Send guests a file request link from Share Large Video Files so they upload their local recording without an account; send the multitrack to your editor with one link (up to 20 GB); and share the finished MP3 or video for review with Client review.

Files podcasters send, and how big they get

Audio: 48,000 samples × 3 bytes × 3,600 s = 518 MB for one mono hour. MP3: 128 kbps × 3,600 s ÷ 8 = 57.6 MB.

A workflow that works

  1. Before recording, create a Request files link and send it to the guest with a note: record locally in WAV, keep recording until you say stop.
  2. After the call, the guest opens the link and uploads the file, no account needed. It arrives with you as a normal transfer.
  3. Send all tracks to your editor in one zipped transfer, with Email me when it's downloaded on.
  4. The editor sends the cut back with Client review; for video podcasts you comment at the exact second.

Local recordings in sync

Ask every speaker to start recording before the call starts and clap once at the beginning: the clap lines the tracks up in the edit. Keep recordings in WAV until the final mix; export MP3 only for publishing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my guest's recording?

Send them a file request link. They upload the file after the call, with no account, and it arrives with you in full quality.

How big is an hour of podcast audio?

About 520 MB as 24-bit 48 kHz mono WAV per speaker, and about 58 MB as a 128 kbps MP3.

Can I send video podcast files?

Yes, up to 20 GB per transfer. An hour of 4K is about 10 GB from a phone and more from a camera, so upload on a fast connection.

Should I send MP3 to my editor?

No. Send WAV; MP3 is lossy and each re-encode loses quality. MP3 is for the published episode.
