Extract Frames From a Video as JPG

Save frames as images: every few seconds, at set times, or one thumbnail.

By · Last updated

Your files are processed on your device and never uploaded.

Grab a still from a video for a thumbnail, a document or a contact sheet. Take one frame every few seconds, frames at the exact times you pick while playing, or just one image, at the video's full resolution.

How to convert video to JPG

  1. Choose or drop a video.
  2. Pick every few seconds, times you choose (play and press “Add the current position”), or one thumbnail.
  3. Choose JPG or PNG and the size.
  4. Press Save frames, then download the images (as a ZIP when there are several) or send them with a link.

Three ways to pick frames

ModeGood for
Every few secondsContact sheets, reviewing a long recording, storyboard frames
At times I pickThe best moments, slides from a recorded talk
One thumbnailA cover image for YouTube, a blog or a document

Up to 500 images per run. File names include the time of each frame, for example holiday-1m05s.jpg.

Sharp, exact frames

Each frame is decoded at the exact timestamp by your browser's video decoder, not captured from the screen, so you get the full resolution of the video (for example 3840 × 2160 from 4K) with no player controls in the picture. JPG at 90% is a good balance; PNG is lossless but several times larger. Videos are made of compressed frames too, so a still is never sharper than the video itself; fast motion can look blurred.

Private

Frames are extracted in your browser; the video is not uploaded. To make an animation instead, use Video to GIF; to shrink the images afterwards, Compress image.
