Convert TS to MP4

MPEG-TS recordings and stream captures to MP4 without re-encoding.

By · Last updated

Your files are processed on your device and never uploaded.

Quick answer: To convert TS to MP4, add the .ts file and press Convert. When it holds H.264 video with AAC sound, as most recordings and stream captures do, the streams are copied into an MP4 without re-encoding, so there is no quality loss. Nothing is uploaded.

Screen recorders, stream captures and TV recorders save MPEG transport stream (.ts) files, which many editors, phones and websites refuse. Re-pack them as MP4 here, usually in seconds.

How to convert TS to MP4

  1. Choose the .ts file: an OBS recording, a stream capture or a TV recording.
  2. Keep “Plays everywhere” to get H.264 MP4.
  3. Press Convert TS to MP4; the note tells you whether it is a quick copy.
  4. Download the MP4 or send it with a link.

Where .ts files come from

  • OBS Studio can record to MPEG-TS, which survives a crash better than MP4, so many streamers use it and convert afterwards.
  • Live stream downloads: HLS streams are made of .ts segments, and capture tools often save them as one .ts file.
  • TV and set-top box recordings are often saved as .ts as well; see below for which ones a browser can read.

A copy, not a re-encode

A transport stream is built for broadcasting: the video is chopped into small packets so a receiver can join mid-stream. MP4 is built for files: it has an index at the start that lets players seek instantly. When the video inside is H.264 and the sound AAC, the tool only moves the streams from one container to the other, which keeps the quality exactly and takes seconds even for long recordings.

What cannot be converted

Broadcast TV recordings often use MPEG-2 video or AC-3 sound, which a browser cannot decode. Those files cannot be read here; the page tells you so instead of producing a broken file. Use a desktop app such as HandBrake or VLC for them.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an OBS .ts recording to MP4?

Choose the .ts file here and press Convert TS to MP4. OBS normally records H.264 with AAC sound, so it is a quick copy with no quality loss.

Can I convert a TV recording in .ts?

Only when it uses H.264 video. Many broadcast recordings use MPEG-2 video, which browsers cannot decode; the page tells you if that is the case.

Why is my TS file not playing on my phone?

Many phones and editors do not open transport streams. The same video as an MP4 plays everywhere.

Is the recording uploaded?

No. It is converted in your browser on your device.
