How to convert MP4 to MP3

  1. Choose one or more MP4 files.
  2. Pick the MP3 quality: 192 kbps is a good default, 128 kbps for speech, 320 kbps for music.
  3. Press Convert to MP3.
  4. Play the MP3 on the page, then download it.

Choosing an MP3 bitrate

BitrateGood forPer minute
128 kbpsSpeech, podcasts, lectures0.96 MB
192 kbpsMost music1.44 MB
256 kbpsMusic on good headphones1.92 MB
320 kbpsThe highest MP3 quality2.4 MB

A higher bitrate cannot add quality that the video's sound did not have: phone videos usually carry 128 to 256 kbps AAC, so 192 or 256 kbps MP3 keeps everything.

How the conversion works

An MP4 holds a video track and a sound track, usually AAC. The tool reads only the sound track, decodes it with your browser and encodes it with LAME, the reference MP3 encoder, compiled to WebAssembly. It runs many times faster than real time, and the video part is never decoded. Song titles and other tags in the MP4 are carried over where MP3 supports them.

Prefer an Apple-friendly file with no re-encoding? Extract the audio as M4A.
