Designing for 16 pixels

A favicon is tiny. Use a bold symbol or one or two letters rather than a full logo with a tagline, and high contrast. Small icons are made by scaling down in halving steps from a large working copy, which keeps edges crisp. Padding gives a logo that touches the edges some breathing room, and rounded corners or a circle match app-icon styles. The iPhone icon always gets a solid background because iOS shows transparent areas as black.

A real ICO file

The favicon.ico is written here byte by byte as a genuine multi-size icon file (PNG-compressed entries, supported by every current browser and by Windows since Vista), not a renamed PNG. Nothing is uploaded: your logo is processed in your browser. To edit the image first, for example to crop it square, use the image editor. Need a QR code for your site too? Frequently asked questions

What size should my favicon image be?

Square and at least 512 × 512 pixels, so the large Android icon stays sharp. Smaller images work but are upscaled.

Where do I put the files?

In the root folder of your website (next to index.html), then paste the HTML shown with the results into the head of your pages.

Is favicon.ico still needed?

Yes. Browsers and many tools request /favicon.ico automatically, even without a link tag.

Can I make a favicon from a photo?

Yes, choose Crop the centre, but a simple logo or letter is much easier to recognise at 16 pixels.

Is my logo uploaded?

No. The icons are created on your device.
