Quick answer: To send a large PSD file, upload it to Share Large Video Files (up to 20 GB, no account) and share the download link: the file arrives unchanged. A layered retouching PSD is about 600 MB, more than most email providers accept.

What is a PSD file?

PSD is Photoshop's native file format. It keeps every layer, mask, adjustment layer, smart object and text layer, so the recipient can keep editing exactly where you left off. Retouchers, designers, illustrators and agencies swap PSDs all the time.

PSDs grow with pixel dimensions, bit depth and the number of layers. Each full-size pixel layer adds roughly another copy of the image, and embedded smart objects carry their own full-resolution content. A PSD is limited to 2 GB and 30,000 pixels per side; bigger documents are saved as PSB (Large Document Format).

Extensions: .psd, .psb.

How to send PSD files without changing them

  1. Open Share Large Video Files in any browser and choose Get a link (or Send by email).
  2. Drop PSD files on the upload box, or pick a whole folder. Up to 20 GB and 1000 files per transfer.
  3. Optional: add a password, a download limit or an expiry under More options.
  4. Copy the link (or show the QR code) and send it by chat or email. The recipient downloads the original file, byte for byte.

Tips for sending PSD files

  • Turn on "Maximize compatibility" when saving if the recipient uses Lightroom or another app to preview it; it adds a flattened copy (and size).
  • Zip the PSD together with any linked smart object files and fonts you are allowed to share.
  • Send PSB rather than splitting a document that is over 2 GB.
  • Add a flattened JPEG or PNG for anyone who only needs to approve the design.

How to open a PSD file

Photoshop on Windows and Mac opens everything. Affinity Photo, GIMP and the free web app Photopea open PSDs with most layers intact. On a Mac, Preview and Quick Look show a flattened view. Photoshop on iPad opens PSDs; on phones, most apps only show a preview.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my PSD over 1 GB?

Every pixel layer and smart object stores full-resolution image data. High resolution, 16-bit mode and many layers multiply the size quickly.

What is the difference between PSD and PSB?

PSB is Photoshop's Large Document Format. It works like PSD but allows files over 2 GB and up to 300,000 pixels per side.

Can someone without Photoshop open my PSD?

Yes, with Affinity Photo, GIMP or the free Photopea web app, though some effects and adjustment layers may not look identical.
