Quick answer: A minute of 8K video is about 900 MB (YouTube recommended upload, 8K 30 fps, 120 Mbps). An hour is about 53 GB. Size depends on the bitrate, which depends on the codec and frame rate more than the resolution alone.
8K file size by length
| Recording | 1 min | 5 min | 10 min | 30 min | 60 min |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube recommended upload, 8K 30 fps (120 Mbps) | 900 MB | 4.4 GB | 8.8 GB | 26 GB | 53 GB |
| YouTube recommended upload, 8K 60 fps (180 Mbps) | 1.3 GB | 6.6 GB | 13 GB | 40 GB | 79 GB |
Estimates from the bitrate: size = bitrate × length. Real files vary with the scene (motion, detail, low light) and the camera's settings. Sources: YouTube's recommended upload bitrates (SDR, standard frame rate) (80 to 160 Mbps at 30 fps, 120 to 240 Mbps at 60 fps; middle values).
How long does it take to upload?
| Upload speed | 10 minutes of YouTube recommended upload, 8K 60 fps (13 GB) |
|---|---|
| 10 Mbps | about 3 h |
| 25 Mbps | about 1 h 12 min |
| 50 Mbps | about 36 min |
| 100 Mbps | about 18 min |
| 300 Mbps | about 6 min |
Upload speed is usually lower than the download speed your provider advertises. Try the upload time calculator with your own numbers.
What makes 8K files bigger or smaller
Phones that record 8K usually use lower bitrates than these to save space, and camera RAW or ProRes 8K is far bigger. Look at the bitrate in your camera's settings, or check a file's size and length with the video bitrate calculator.

Frequently asked questions
How big is a minute of 8K video?
About 900 MB at 120 Mbps (YouTube's recommended upload rate, 30 fps) and about 1.3 GB at 60 fps. Phone 8K files can be smaller; RAW and ProRes are much larger.
Can I email an 8K video?
No: even a few seconds is over the 20 to 36 MB email limits. Send a download link instead.
Is it worth sending 8K instead of 4K?
Only if the recipient needs it for editing, cropping or an 8K screen. For viewing, a 4K export is a quarter of the size.
