When PNG beats JPG

JPG compression is designed for photographs. On sharp edges, such as black text on a white page, thin lines in a floor plan or the axes of a chart, it leaves faint smudges around each stroke. PNG is lossless, so the image is an exact copy of the rendered page. That makes PNG the better choice for documentation screenshots, slides pasted into another deck, diagrams for a wiki, or text you will run through OCR.

The price is size: a page full of photos is several times larger as PNG than as JPG. For photo-heavy PDFs, PDF to JPG gives far smaller files.

White background, exact colours

Pages are rendered with a white background, the way they look in a PDF reader, so they drop straight into documents and presentations. Need a smaller file for a website afterwards? Run the PNGs through Compress PNG, which reduces the colours with little visible change.

Nothing is uploaded

The PDF is opened by pdf.js inside your browser and each page is drawn on your device. Your document is never sent to a server, and there are no ads, accounts or watermarks.

Can I get a transparent background?

No. Pages are rendered on white, as in a PDF reader, which is what almost every use needs.

Which resolution should I choose?

150 dpi for screens and slides, 300 dpi for printing or reading small text.
