Audio Mixer: Layer Tracks

Layer a voice-over on music, with volume, timing and fades.

By · Last updated

Your files are processed on your device and never uploaded.

Play several tracks at the same time: a voice-over over background music, two takes, or sound effects on an ambience. Set each track's volume, when it starts, its fades, and let the music loop until the voice ends.

How to use the audio mixer

  1. Choose two or more audio files (or videos, to use their sound). Put the main track, such as the voice, first.
  2. For each track, set the volume, when it starts, fades, and whether it loops.
  3. Choose how long the mix is: until the first track ends, or the longest.
  4. Press Mix audio, listen, then download the mix or send it with a link.

A voice-over with background music

  1. Add the voice recording first, then the music.
  2. Set the music to about −18 dB so the voice stays clear, tick Loop if the music is shorter than the voice, and give it a 3 second fade out.
  3. Keep “Length: until the first track ends”, so the music stops with the voice.

The loudness of a mix adds up: two tracks at full level can clip. “Prevent clipping” (on by default) runs a look-ahead limiter that keeps every peak at or below −1 dBFS instead of distorting.

Mixed on your device

Every track is decoded, resampled to one rate and mixed in small pieces in your browser, so long mixes work on phones too and nothing is uploaded. Only need clips one after another? Use Merge audio. Putting music under a video? Use Add audio to video.

Frequently asked questions

How loud should background music be under a voice?

Usually 15 to 20 dB below the voice: set the music to about −18 dB and adjust by ear.

Can I use the sound of a video?

Yes. Add an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV and its sound track is used as a track in the mix.

How many tracks can I mix?

Up to 8 at once.

Will the mix distort?

Not with “Prevent clipping” on: a limiter holds the peaks at −1 dBFS. Lower the track volumes if you hear it pumping.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The mix is made in your browser.
