# Extract RAR Files Online

Got a .rar file and nothing to open it with? Open it here, see what is inside, and save the files you need. It also opens 7z, TAR, TGZ and ISO archives, on phones and computers.

**Quick answer:** To open a RAR file without installing anything, choose it here and press Extract files: the archive is unpacked in your browser (RAR 4 and RAR 5, up to 1 GB) and you can save each file or all of them as a ZIP. Nothing is uploaded. Password-protected and split (.part2.rar) archives cannot be opened here.

## How to use it

1. Choose the .rar file (or a .7z, .tar, .tgz or .iso archive).
2. Check the list of files it contains.
3. Press Extract files.
4. Save the files one by one, or all of them as a ZIP that opens on every device.

## Why RAR files will not open

RAR is a compressed archive format made by the authors of WinRAR. Unlike ZIP, most computers and phones cannot open it out of the box: Windows only added RAR support to File Explorer in Windows 11 (2023), macOS's Archive Utility does not read RAR, and iPhones and Android phones need an extra app. This page opens it with libarchive, the open-source archive library used by many operating systems, running inside your browser.

## What it can and cannot open

| Archive | Opens here? |
| --- | --- |
| RAR 4 and RAR 5 (.rar) | Yes |
| 7-Zip (.7z) | Yes, see [Extract 7z](https://sharelargefilesfree.com/tools/extract-7z) |
| TAR, TGZ, TAR.BZ2, TAR.XZ, ISO, CAB | Yes |
| ZIP | Use [Unzip files](https://sharelargefilesfree.com/tools/unzip-files) (handles passwords and very large ZIPs) |
| Password-protected RAR or 7z | No: encryption needs a desktop app |
| Split archives (.part1.rar, .part2.rar, .7z.001) | No: open the first part in a desktop app with all parts in one folder |

For the cases this page cannot handle, use 7-Zip on Windows, The Unarchiver or Keka on a Mac, or the RAR app on Android.

## Private, and a word on safety

The archive is unpacked on your own device and never uploaded, so it works for private files too. Archives are a common way to pass on malware, though: be careful with programs (.exe, .scr, .bat, .js) from someone you do not know, even if they came in a RAR. Extracting a file here does not run it.

The archive has to fit in the browser's memory, so the limit is {tool_max}; bigger archives are easier on a computer with a desktop app.

## Sending it on

Need to pass the contents to someone who cannot open RAR either? Save all files as a ZIP, which every device opens, or [send the files with a link](https://sharelargefilesfree.com/), free up to 20 GB, so they can download them one by one.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I open a RAR file without WinRAR?

Choose it on this page and press Extract files. It is unpacked in your browser, so you do not need WinRAR or any other app, on a computer or a phone.

### Can I open a RAR file on iPhone or Android?

Yes. Open this page in Safari or Chrome, choose the RAR from Files or Downloads, and save the extracted files.

### Does it open password-protected RAR files?

No. libarchive, the library used here, cannot decrypt RAR or 7z archives. Use 7-Zip, WinRAR, The Unarchiver or Keka with the password.

### What about .part1.rar and .part2.rar files?

Those are parts of one split archive, and they cannot be joined in the browser. Put all parts in one folder and open the first with a desktop app.

### Is my archive uploaded?

No. It is opened on your device and nothing is sent to a server.
