## Which format should you convert to?

| JPG | The image is a photo, or it must open anywhere: forms, email, old software, printers. |
| PNG | The image has text, sharp lines or a transparent background, or you will keep editing it. |
| WebP | The image is for a website: smaller than JPG at the same quality, with transparency. |

Converting to JPG fills transparent areas with white (or black, if you prefer), because JPG cannot store transparency.

## Good to know

- Animated GIFs and animated WebP images are converted as a still image (the first frame).
- Converting cannot add quality that was not there: a small, blurry JPG stays small and blurry as a PNG.
- Safari cannot create WebP files. If you pick WebP in Safari, you get a JPG and a note; Chrome, Edge and Firefox create WebP.
- Metadata such as GPS location is not copied into the converted file.
