# Compress WebP Images

WebP is already efficient, but images exported at maximum quality or huge dimensions still weigh a lot. Re-save them as leaner WebP files, several at once, and keep transparent backgrounds.

**Quick answer:** To compress WebP images, add them, keep quality at 75 percent (or adjust it), optionally cap the width or height, and press Compress WebP. The output stays WebP with transparency kept. Safari cannot write WebP, so use Chrome, Edge or Firefox; nothing is uploaded.

## How to use it

1. Choose one or more .webp images.
2. Keep 75 percent quality, or lower it for smaller files.
3. Optionally set a maximum width or height, such as 1920 px for websites.
4. Press Compress WebP and download the images, as a ZIP if there are several.

## Where the savings come from

- **Quality**: WebP files saved at 90 to 100 percent quality are often two or three times larger than at 75 percent, with little visible difference.
- **Dimensions**: a 4000-pixel image shown 1200 pixels wide on a web page wastes most of its bytes. Capping the size saves the most.
- **Metadata**: re-encoding drops embedded camera data and other extras.

If a WebP was saved losslessly (common for graphics and screenshots), compressing it as lossy WebP can make it many times smaller; check sharp edges and text afterwards.

## Browser support

All current browsers can show WebP, but not all can save it: Chrome, Edge and Firefox write WebP, while Safari cannot. In Safari this page saves a JPG (or a PNG when there is transparency) instead and tells you so. For the opposite direction, turn WebP into JPG with [WebP to JPG](https://sharelargefilesfree.com/tools/webp-to-jpg).

## For a target size

If a site needs an exact file size rather than a quality level, use [compress image to 100 KB](https://sharelargefilesfree.com/tools/compress-image-to-100kb) or [200 KB](https://sharelargefilesfree.com/tools/compress-image-to-200kb); choose WebP under Save as there to keep the format.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I reduce the size of a WebP image?

Add it here, keep 75 percent quality or lower it, optionally cap the dimensions, and press Compress WebP.

### Is transparency kept?

Yes. WebP supports transparency, and it is kept when the image is re-saved.

### Why did I get a JPG instead of a WebP?

Safari cannot create WebP files, so it falls back to JPG or PNG. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox to keep WebP.

### Can I compress many WebP files at once?

Yes. Add them all and download the results as a ZIP.
