# How to Send Large Files on Discord Without Nitro

Discord only lets free accounts upload small files, which rules out most videos. Here is how the limit works, what Nitro changes, and how to share big files in any server or DM with a link.

**Quick answer:** Free Discord accounts can upload files of up to 20 MB each (10 MB before August 2026); Nitro Basic allows 50 MB and Nitro 500 MB. For bigger files, upload them here (up to 20 GB) and paste the download link into any server or DM.

## Discord's file size limit for free accounts

On a free account, Discord's upload limit is small: **10 MB per file at the time of writing**. Discord has changed this figure several times over the years, so check its support pages if you need the exact current number.

That is enough for screenshots and short clips, but a minute of 1080p gameplay or phone video is usually well over it. When you try, Discord shows a message that your file is too large and refuses the upload.

There are two official ways to raise the limit:

- **Nitro:** Discord's paid subscriptions allow much bigger uploads, with the full Nitro plan allowing the most.
- **Server Boosts:** servers that reach higher boost levels raise the upload limit for everyone posting in that server, but not in your DMs.

## Uploading a file the normal way

1. Open the channel or DM.
2. Click the **+** button next to the message box, or drag the file into the window. On mobile, tap **+** and pick the file.
3. Add a message if you want, and press Enter.

If the file is over your limit, Discord will not send it. You can shrink the file, pay for Nitro, or send a link instead, which is the option that keeps the original quality at no cost.

## Send any size with a download link

A link takes up one line in the chat, and everyone who clicks it gets the original file:

1. **Go to [Share Large Video Files](https://sharelargefilesfree.com/)**. No sign-up is required.
2. **Add your files**: clips, mod packs, project folders, anything up to 1000 files totalling 20 GB.
3. **Choose _Link_**. Add a password if the server is public and the file is not meant for everyone.
4. **Keep the tab open** until the upload completes, then copy the link.
5. **Paste the link into the channel or DM**. On a phone you can use the share sheet to send it straight to Discord.

Files are delivered without compression, so recordings keep their full resolution and frame rate. The link expires after 1 day, and you can delete it earlier from the **Transfers** page if it was posted somewhere it should not be. Note that the video will not play inline in Discord: people download it and watch it in their own player.

## Sharing links safely in servers

- **Anyone with the link can download** until it expires, so in large or public servers add a password and post it separately, or send the link by DM.
- **Use delete after first download** for one-to-one handovers.
- **Server rules first:** some communities do not allow outside links, so check with the moderators.

## Tips for gamers and creators on PC, iPhone and Android

- **PC clips and recordings:** recording software often saves very large files. Upload the file from your videos folder and paste the link into Discord.
- **Trimming or compressing:** if you only need a short highlight to play inline, trimming and exporting a small copy is the way to fit under the free limit. A free video compressor is coming to this site; for the full-length original, send a link.
- **iPhone:** save the clip to the Files app and upload it in Safari. See the [iPhone guide](https://sharelargefilesfree.com/send-video-from-iphone).
- **Android:** pick the file through your file manager in Chrome. See the [Android guide](https://sharelargefilesfree.com/send-video-from-android).
