# Give Your File a Custom Short Link

A random link is fine in a chat, but not on a whiteboard, a poster or a phone call. A custom short link is a name you choose that anyone can type.

**Quick answer:** To create a custom short link: upload your files, open More options and type a name in "Custom short link", for example class10-maths or wedding-photos-riya. The page tells you straight away whether it is free. Your files are then available at sharelargefilesfree.com/your-name as well as the normal link. Names use lowercase letters, digits and at least one hyphen (5 to 60 characters), are first come, first served, and are freed when the transfer is deleted.

## How to choose a short link

1. [Upload your files](https://sharelargefilesfree.com/) and keep the share method on _Link_.
2. Open **More options** and type a name in **Custom short link**.
3. Wait for the green "available" note, then send. The short link is shown next to your normal link when the upload finishes.

## Rules for short link names

- Lowercase letters a to z, digits and hyphens, with at least one hyphen: _class10-maths_, _menu-2026_, _riya-wedding_.
- 5 to 60 characters.
- Site pages, guides and names of banks, payment apps and government bodies cannot be used, to prevent impersonation.
- First come, first served. The name becomes free again when the transfer expires and is deleted.

## Short link, QR code or normal link?

| Where you share | Best choice |
| --- | --- |
| Classroom board, phone call, radio | Short link |
| Poster, visiting card, product box | QR code (and the short link under it) |
| WhatsApp, email, chat | Normal link or short link |

## All link controls still apply

The short link opens the same transfer, so passwords, [download limits](https://sharelargefilesfree.com/limit-downloads), [release times](https://sharelargefilesfree.com/share-exam-papers-and-notes), [forms](https://sharelargefilesfree.com/collect-emails-before-download) and [country rules](https://sharelargefilesfree.com/country-restricted-download-link) work exactly the same.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is a custom short link free?

Yes, for any link transfer, with no account needed.

### Why must the name contain a hyphen?

It keeps short links from clashing with the site's own pages, which use single words.

### Can I get the name back after the transfer expires?

The name is freed when the transfer is deleted, so anyone, including you, can use it again.

### Does the short link work with email transfers?

No. Short links are for link transfers; email transfers send each recipient a personal link.

### Can I change the short link later?

Not on an existing transfer. Send a new link with the name you want.
